Taxpayers in Big Apple Hit Hardest

New York City taxpayers pay more in state and local taxes than residents in eight other American cities with populations of 1 million people or more.

New York City taxpayers shell out far and away the most in state and local taxes compared with residents in eight other American cities with populations of 1 million people or more.

Taxes eat up $9.02 out of every $100 in household and business income in the Big Apple. The analysis was compiled by the city’s Independent Budget Office using taxes for the 2003-04 budget year.

Following New York was Philadelphia, where state and local taxes account for $7.16 of every $100; Los Angeles, $6.88; San Antonio, $6.73; and Phoenix, $6.25.

The other cities surveyed were San Diego, $6.01; Chicago, $5.89; Houston, $5.53; and Dallas, $5.20.
